Possibilities of UAS In Open-Cast Mine Monitoring

  • Original language description

Open-cast mine environments are generally suitable for UAS aplication, particularly due to visual variation and absence of dense vegetation within the area. UAS flights were implemented monthly as a method of landslide monitoring within open-cast mine during 2016 – 2017. Main outcomes were digital surface models and detailed ortophotos resulting from the aerial photogrammetric measurements. Based on the 2016 – 2017 experience, following settings can be recommended for future use of UAV: optimal ground sample distance of 1.5 px/cm, 60% longitudinal overlap and 50% side ovelap between images, flight speed up to of 4 - 5 m/s. In compliance with the above recommendations, UAS DSMs can achieve accuracies of ± 30 mm in places where the open-cast mine slopes are without vegetation. With such accuracy, the UAS can be seen as an inexpensive and operational complement to conventional aerial photogrammetry, as well as a method for monitoring the side slopes of open-cast mines (particularly inaccessible places) and for operational monitoring of landslide movements in open-cast mines. To achieve the largest possible precision of resulting DSM we encourage the utilization of ground control points (targets of size 500 x 500 mm) deployed across the area of interest.
