Spatio-Temporal Variations of Night-Time Road Crashes: Are Night-Time Lights a Reliable Indicator?

  • Original language description

Decreased ambient lighting conditions are one of the main factors that contribute to the higher probability of more serious road crashes or even road crash fatalities. These conditions are determined not only by weather conditions and natural light sources, however, by artificial light sources such as street lighting. Reliable data on street lighting remain scarce and it is difficult to make them as the model input, especially over large areas and for long periods of time. This paper investigates the performance of VIIRS Night-Time Lights (NTLs) as an open data source to capture the spatio-temporal variations of night-time road crashes from January 2017 to December 2022 in two study areas of the Czech Republic. The research methodology applies simple regression models to investigate the relationship between night-time crashes and radiance. Both regression models, the Poisson Generalised Linear Model (GLM) and the hurdle Poisson model, had mainly statistically significant estimates of regression parameters indicating the importance of the radiance.
