    Use of recycled waste plastics in modified bitumen binders

    The global construction of asphalt pavements is expanding, particularly in developing regions and highly urbanized areas. Bitumen remains the primary material for road and highway construction but rising costs and increasing scarcity are driving the need for more sustainable alternatives. One effective strategy to reduce infrastructure expenses is the incorporation of recycled materials. Polymer modified bitumen (PMB) mixes enhance the physical properties of traditional bitumen, with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) being the most commonly used polymer additive. This paper explores the integration of recycled plastic waste into modified bitumen binder. Five different samples are tested using standard bitumen binder evaluation methods, all utilizing the same base binder. The findings indicate that polymer modified bitumen exhibits superior laboratory performance compared to unmodified bitumen.
