X-Ray Fluorescence in Research on Czech Curtural Monuments
Original language description
Any disturbance of integrity of historic artefacts during their investigation, e.g. sampling of material, is in the most part of cases undesirable. This enforces the value of non-destructive testing and analytical methods, among them also of a radionuclide X-ray fluorescence (RXRFA). Up to now four types of historic objects has been investigated, in part for the purposes of history of art and in part as a basis for restoration works: 1).medieval frescoes in some Czech castles and churches (e.g., Žirovnice Castle, Karlštejn Castle, Church of Our Lady before Tyn in Prague), 2).metal sculptures and objects of applied art (e.g., the Reliquary of St. Maurus, statues from the Plague Column in Olomouc) 3).paints and inks of old manuscripts (e.g., the Homiliary of the Opatovice Monastery), 4).paintings (e.g., icons from the Balcans).
