    Sorption of Cobalt on Magnetite

    Using 60Co radiotracer the sorption of Co(II) onto two Fe3O4 preparations was followed. The dependencies of mass distribution coefficients KD on pH and sorption isotherms at pH = 8 were determined. Sorption mechanism involving the ion-exchange of Co2+, CoOH+ ions for H+ ions on surface bound hydroxyl groups s-OH and the sorption of molecularly dissolved Co(OH)2 onto deprotonised hydroxyl groups s-O- was proposed. In the frame of suggested mechanism the character of experimental dependencies KD = f(pH) on both studied absorbers was explained, satisfactorily. Sorption isotherms determination revealed direct relation between maximum sorption capacities of the absorbers followed and their physicochemical properties (specific surface values, acidobasic behaviour estimated from titration curves).
