    Surface acoustic waves in ferroelectrics

    A well-known phenomenon of elastic energy propagation along the free surface of a solid of infinite depth is the Rayleigh waves. There are the waves localized at the surface of the substrate --- the surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The SAWs are used for investigations of solid surfaces and films, deposited on the surfaces. We consider the propagation of the Rayleigh wave on the surface of a ferroelectric and in a thin ferroelectric layer deposited on a solid substrate in the close vicinity of the structure phase transition. It is well-known that the elastic constants of a ferroelectric crystals change drastically when the crystal structure changes its symmetry. This softening of the crystal structure results in the substantial variations of the velocityof SAWs. For illustration of this effect we have calculated the temperature dependencies of Rayleigh wave velocity and dispersion curves at some temperatures for strontium titanate, SrTiO3 film deposited on a metal plate.
