Study of Enhanced Optical Transmission Through Subwavelength Apertures

  • Original language description

A revelation of the transmission enhancement of the electromagnetic field through subwavelength apertures has initiated many questions and new studies in this area recently. The whole physical picture in the enhanced transmission phenomenon has not yet been fully explained. With an intention of this work to contribute to this effort, the interaction of an electromagnetic wave with various classes of subwavelength apertures is studied in detail, using several approximate (composed diffracted evanescent wave model, combined model with surface plasmon polaritons) and rigorous approaches (mainly finite difference time domain method and rigorous coupled wave analysis), and revealing basic physical features of the interaction. The attention is also given toa comparison of these modeling approaches on a sample structures (e.g. single apertures, apertures with corrugations, on either input or on both sides, apertures in a periodic arrays arrangements, and a slit-groove diffraction problem).
