Original language description
Ion acceleration in thin foils of reduced surface, irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses, are studied by using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Maximum energy of accelerated ions can be enhanced several times and transformation efficiency of the laser pulse energy to ion kinetic energy can be increased by an order of magnitude when the foil surface is reduced sufficiently.
