Single- and Several-Photon Detection Avalanche Photodiode Study
Original language description
Silicon is a natural first choice for the design and construction of a solid state photon counter. The avalanche photodiodes acting as photon counting devices has been pioneered by S. Cova and co-workers. This detector, called Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD), is an avalanche photodiode structure prepared using a conventional planar technology on silicon reported by Haitz. Research and development of the SPADs based on silicon were started in our labs at the CTU in Prague in 1984. The primary goal of the work was to develop a solid state option to the micro-channel plate photomultiplier based photon detector for laser ranging applications.
