Erbium Burnable Absorber for High-Burnup Fuels
Original language description
Even existing and operated nuclear power plants are subjected to further development, which is motivated by exploration of possibilities of increasing their efficiency. One option is to increase fuel burnup. This allows to reach higher power output fromthe fuel loaded into the reactor. Usually, reaching higher burnup requires increased initial fuel enrichment. This, on the other hand, complicates operations with the fresh fuel. One viable option to compensate the initial excess reactivity is addition of burnable absorbers in the fuel mixture. Fundamental parameters of erbium burnable absorber and modelling of such a fuel are presented in this paper. In addition, simple burnup characteristics of fuel with erbium burnable absorber are compared to gadolinium used in the same manner as erbium in various types of fuel mixtures.
