Explanation of extraordinary transmission on 1D and 2D metallic gratings

  • Original language description

The phenomenon of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) / reflection is investigated on subwavelength periodic metallic gratings with binary profile. Metals are not considered as perfect conductors. Three representative periodic structures are investigated: 1D periodic grating of grooves, 1D periodic grating of slits, and 2D periodic grating of apertures. For the case of 1D periodic grating, dispersion relation is calculated as a function of grating periodicity and filling factor for both TE and TM polarizations. Field investigations of waveguide / cavity mode and surface plasmon-polariton excitations reveals the significant process in the energy transfer. For the case of 2D grating, map of modes, based on the propagation constants and the attenuation coefficients, is constructed in order to identify the group of modes strongly contributing to the EOT. It is revealed that waveguide / cavity resonances play a significant role in the energy propagating through sub-wavelength slits / a
