Solvent Optimization for the Future Minor Actinoids Partitioning for their Transmutation
Original language description
The CyMe4-BTBP and its derivatives have been demonstrated to be prospective extractants for the liquid-liquid extraction of minor actinides over lanthanides from high-level liquid waste issuing the reprocessing of the irradiated nuclear fuel. Today, CyMe4-BTBP is generally accepted as a reference molecule for the r-SANEX process (Selective Actinide Extraction). This paper will summarize the results of optimization of the composition of solvents based on bipyridine and/or phenantroline extracting compounds and a broad range diluents. Also, complexing properties of the hydrophilic derivatives of bipyridine and/or phenantroline compounds for the separation of Am(III) over Eu(III) or for the mutual Am(III)/Cm(III) separation will be discussed. Extraction properties of a series of new BTBP derivatives such as MeCyMe4-BTBP, t-BuCyMe4-BTBP, Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP, Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP or the CyMe4-BTPhen phenantroline derivative were tested and compared with the extraction properties of the reference molecule CyMe4-BTBP. In a search for a better diluent, influence of the diluents such as n-octanol, cyclohexanone and a broad series of different cyclohexanone derivatives on the extraction properties were evaluated. In addition to the basic testing of the dependences of Am and Eu distribution ratio values and their mutual separation factors on nitric acid concentrations, the results of the kinetic studies will be presented as well as the stoichiometry of the extracted complexes for the better performing molecules. In addition to this basic testing, performance of these ligands for Am/Cm separation will be discussed. Complexing properties of several novel hydrophilic ligands, such as (PhSO3Na)2-BTBP, (CH2NME3)2-BTBP or (PhSO3Na)2-BTPhen will be described and their prospects for the i-SANEX process discussed. As an example of additional applications, performance of this system for a mutual Am(III)/Cm(III) separation will be demonstrated.
