Chromium ions are known to have good fluorescence properties in the infrared spectral region near 2.5 um. The aim of this study was investigation of a new laser material Zn1-xMnxSe doped by chromium. The crystals were produced with Mn concentration x = 0.05 and 0.3. The spectroscopic characteristics as absorption and emission spectra were measured. For sample with x = 0.3, the absorption peak was shifted to longer wavelength (1835 nm) with comparison of Cr:ZnSe (~1770 nm). The emission spectra length (FWHM) was in wavelength range from 2030 up to 2665 nm. The lasing properties of Cr doped Zn1-xMnxSe crystals were also investigated using pulsed laser diode excitation at 1690 nm (pulse repetition rate 10 Hz, pulse width 2 ms). The longitudinal-pumped resonator was hemispherical with output coupler radius of curvature 150 mm. The laser emission peak at wavelength 2451 and 2468 nm was achieved for Cr:Zn0.95Mn0.05Se and Cr:Zn0.70Mn0.30Se, respectively. The output beam spatial structure was also studied and during measurements was stable. The input-output characteristics of Cr: Zn1-xMnxSe crystals were measured; the output mean power up to 3.5 and 1.9 mW was obtained for 83 and 67 mW absorbed pumping power for Cr:Zn0.95Mn0.05Se and Cr:Zn0.70Mn0.30Se, resp. For lasing wavelength selection, the single 1.5 mm thick quartz plate was placed inside the optical resonator at the Brewster angle between the output coupler and laser active medium. This element provided the tuning range from 2292 to 2593 and from 2353 to 2540 nm for Cr:Zn0.95Mn0.05Se and Cr:Zn0.70Mn0.30Se, resp. The linewidth of separate spectral emission wavelengths was approximately 15 nm (FWHM).
