Luminescence Study of RE-Doped Low-Energy Phonon RbPb2Cl5 Crystals for Mid-IR Lasers Emitting Above 4.5 µm Wavelength
Original language description
Low-phonon energy laser hosts doped by rare-earth (RE) ions are a key factor for room-temperature mid-IR laser operation at a longer side of mid-infrared wavelength range (3-15 um), where the luminescence of fluoride and oxide crystals is quenched by fast multiphonon relaxation. The ongoing search for new solid-state laser materials allowing long-wavelength laser emission is driven mainly by the interest in active remote detection of chemical and biological agents with characteristic absorbance in this wavelength region. Oxide and fluoride hosts usually show a maximum phonon energy above 500 cm-1, whereas materials with higher atomic mass, such as RE-doped alkali-lead halide crystals MPb2X5 (M = Rb,K and X = Cl, Br), have the maximum phonon energy below 200 cm-1. This work is focused on the luminescence properties of the highly promising rubidium lead chloride single crystal RbPb2Cl5 (RPC) doped by Nd3+, Pr3+, and Dy3+ ions.
