Original language description
New laser applications for measurement of pollutant in the air, free-space communications, range-finding, target illumination, defence - IR countermeasures, medicine treatment or biomedical diagnostics, and industrial technologies require the radiation with the wavelength in mid-infrared 4 - 6 um region. Meanwhile, lasers based on gas (CO), semiconductor (lead-salt), quantum cascade lasers, or nonlinear effects (as OPO) are used for generation radiation in this part of spectra but it is not sufficient. Still new, reliable, and compact radiation sources are desired and new active materials for compact preferably solid-state laser systems generating radiation in the mid-infrared (IR) region are required. Modification of transitional metal (Fe2+) ion local environment in Zn1-xMnxSe solid solution compared to pure ZnSe results in a shift of electronic levels position and thus in changes of fluorescence spectrum and oscillation wavelengths. This can enable to develop a cryogenically-cooled laser system based on Fe-doped active material pumped by long pulses with the oscillation wavelength region from 5 up to 5.8 mm. Our goal is the investigation of the temperature-dependent spectroscopic properties and laser output characteristics of novel high manganese concentrated Fe:Zn1-xMnxSe crystal with the Mn content x = 0.4.
