Elastic Modulus, Fracture Toughness, and Fatigue Crack Growth Rate of Self Standing Cold Sprayed Deposits
Original language description
Recently developed measurement techniques for estimation of elastic modulus, crack growth rate curves and fracture toughness were applied to cold sprayed Ni, Ti, Al and Cu deposits and to their cold rolled counterparts. The specimen shape for all measurements was rectangular bar of dimension 4x3x32 mm. Both elastic modulus measurement and crack growth rate tests were performed using resonance in pure bending with stress ratio R ~ -1. The resonance was used for loading of the sample as well as for crack length measurement. Fracture toughness was measured with fatigue pre-cracked samples using three-point bending. The crack length as well as the value of J integral were obtained by digital image correlation. The results indicate, that even though the elastic modulus of cold sprayed deposits can approach the bulk values, their fatigue fracture mechanical performance may be significantly lower than their cold rolled counterparts.
