    Growing a single crystal of MSM alloy at FZU

  • Original language description

    Single-crystalline samples are crucial for Magnetic shape memory (MSM) effect and systematic study of twin boundaries’ mobility in Ni-Mn-Ga. We grew most of the crystals in an optical floating zone furnace. Due to experimental difficulties, the polycrystalline batch was placed in a sapphire tube which protect the melt from dropping. We select few attempts to depict our journey to establish Ni-Mn-Ga single crystal growth in the Institute of Physics AVCR. The best result was a bicrystal, and we believe the single crystal is not many attempts far away.
