Picosecond synchronously pumped lasers based on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) are attractive sources of watt-level optical radiation in the visible and infrared spectral region at high repetition rates. This type of Raman laser having a low pulse energy threshold compared to a Raman generator/convertor is robust, versatile, and very effective. Another advantage is interesting possibility of generation at new wavelengths using cascade principle of SRS at single or multiple Raman lines. Cross-cascade process, where the Stokes wave is a source of nonlinearity for additional SRS radiation scattered at another vibrational mode, can be easily achieved in the case of synchronously pumped Raman laser. In many papers of our research group, we have achieved significant pulse shortening at wavelengths corresponding to cross-cascade SRS process in various crystalline Raman media. The output pulse duration was controlled by cavity length detuning. Due to group velocity mismatch of the individual waves and ability to control their delay by cavity length detuning, the SRS pulses are preferentially amplified at the leading edge leading to pulse shortening. This phenomenon is known for synchronously pumped Raman lasers generating at single vibrational line. However, a numerical model for the cross-cascade SRS process confirming the experimental results was not available. To the best of our knowledge, we present a numerical model of a cross-cascade crystalline Raman laser synchronously pumped by a continuously mode-locked picosecond laser for the first time. The pulse shortening mechanism as well as the whole dynamics of Stokes waves generation will be discussed in detail.
