Principles for designing tour routes in a historic garden and park
Original language description
In the period after World War II a distinctive theory and practice of presenting heritage sites to the public developed in Czechoslovakia. This specifically Czech approach deals primarily with interiors and almost overlooks the presentation of historic parks and gardens. The team of authors performed a study of castles and chateaux open to the public, looking at how tour paths are used to present their associated parks and gardens. The study confirmed the assumption that this form of presentation comprising separate tour routes is not common compared to the number of sites that have been opened to the public. For that reason the team of authors attempted to devise an approach for the heritage authorities to present historic parks and gardens in a sensitive way, based on fundamental heritage documents, most notably ICOMOS and the Venice and Florence charters. This specific approach was used to design a tour path in the English landscape park of the Krásný Dvůr national heritage site.
