Unpacking the `Authorized Discourse’ of World Heritage. The Case of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region
Original language description
The paper, adapted from a previous master thesis, aims to contribute to the examination of how an `authorized heritage discourse’ operates in the process of production of a World Heritage site, and how it interacts with the `difficult’ cultural context of Central and Eastern Europe. Working with the case of the World Heritage site of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region, a transboundary cultural landscape split between Germany and the Czech Republic, I study the discourses participating in the nomination and designation of this World Heritage site using discourse analysis. I argue that in the selected case, the `authorized heritage discourse’ of the World Heritage Convention is adopted in order to acquire the inscription and achieve legitimisation. This results in accentuation of an ostensibly objective and cohesive narrative at the expense of the `difficult,’ uncomfortable discourses associated with the vast heterogeneous landscape.
