The workshop introduced students and scholars from the field of architecture to the use of digital tools for leveraging material potential in the design of circular architecture. It aimed to demonstrate how digital design and structural analysis tools can be integrated into the early design process to assess structural behavior and optimize architectural solutions. In particular, participants were introduced to Karamba3D as a tool for evaluating structural performance during the design phase. The workshop began with a presentation providing an overview of recycled plastics in construction. This introduction addressed the environmental impact of plastic waste, as well as the benefits and challenges associated with its reuse in the built environment. A second presentation showcased architectural projects realized using recycled plastic materials, highlighting the role of digital tools in improving design quality and mitigating construction-related issues. In addition, research on compressive structures such as vaults was presented to familiarize participants with the fundamental design principles of these systems, as the practical component of the workshop focused on constructing a small scale vault. Following this introduction, the use of sand-plastic composite materials in construction was presented, along with an explanation of how finite element analysis can be employed to determine appropriate material mixing ratios based on structural requirements. The first task assigned to participants involved the design of an interlocking brick system. A pre-built Grasshopper definition was provided, enabling participants to visualize a 3D model of their brick designs integrated into wall assemblies composed of the interlocking units. An additional Grasshopper definition incorporating a preconfigured Karamba3D structural analysis workflow was also supplied. Based on the wall axis lines, the structural system was analyzed, and key performance indicators such as maximum displacement and stress distribution were displayed. The primary inputs for this analysis included the wall axis lines and the mechanical properties of the sand-plastic composite, defined according to the selected mixing ratios. In the final phase of the workshop, a vault structure was examined as a practical case study. Structural analysis was conducted in Grasshopper using Karamba3D to identify the optimal sand-plastic mixing ratio required to ensure adequate structural stability. Based on these results, a small-scale vault was collaboratively constructed by the participants.
