NEW CHALLENGES FOR SOCIALIST VILLAGES
Original language description
The article examines the transformation of rural countryside and architecture in post-WWII Czechoslovakia, framed by the rise of the Communist Party and the subsequent nationalization of the building industry. As architectural practice transitioned into the state enterprise Stavoprojekt, the countryside became a primary site for radical social and economic engineering. While left-wing architects within the BAPS bloc viewed this reorganization as an opportunity to modernize rural life through regional planning and systemic typification, these advancements were fundamentally tied to the loss of professional autonomy and the imposition of centralized state authority. By analyzing the early 1950s, the text captures a pivotal moment where the pursuit of higher living standards and agricultural efficiency was inextricably linked to the rigid socialization of the countryside, reflecting a complex tension between progressive ambition and systemic constraint.
