Realization of spirometry measurement using EIT

  • Original language description

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive diagnostic method that provides information about regional and global ventilation. Based on the change in electrical bioimpedance inside the chest during the breathing cycle, it should be possible to execute spirometry measurement using the EIT to remove the negative characteristics of the standard spirometry measurement. The aim of this study was to realize spirometry measurement using PulmoVista 500 EIT system (Dräger, Germany) simultaneous measured with standard spirometry and evaluate spirometry parameters FVC, FEV1 and Tiffeneau index (TI) based on recalculation using the calibration constant obtained during the simultaneous measurement on tidal breathing. The second aim was to determine whether the EIT belt around the subject’s chest has the influence to measured spirometry parameters. A prospective interventional study was performed on 22 healthy volunteers (13 males and 9 females). During the experiment, four spirometry measurements were performed for each examined individual to calculate the spirometric parameters of FVC, FEV1 and TI. Measurements were performed in a randomized sequence: two with the spirometer alone and two with the simultaneous use of spirometer and the EIT. The results of the experimental study showed that no statistically significant difference between spirometric parameters FVC, FEV1 and TI obtained from simultaneous measurement with the spirometer and the EIT (p>0.05). Furthermore, results also did not show a statistically significant difference between spirometric parameters FVC, FEV1 and TI obtained from measurement with and without EIT belt (p>0.05).
