    PRACTICE-ORIENTED EDUCATION OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERS

  • Original language description

Biomedical engineering is a comprehensive multidisciplinary program that combines engineering principles, the fundamentals of mathematics and physics, biology, and medicine. Biomedical engineers should be able to communicate with physicians and understand medical devices' technical principles. This means that they should have a reasonably broad range of knowledge in many areas, including medical legislation. We also believe that biomedical engineers should be able to collaborate on research experiments in clinical settings and should be able to process measured data, including at least a basic statistical evaluation of the experiment. The education of biomedical engineers should be based on practical aspects with plenty of hands-on experience. We have prepared a set of experimental laboratory tasks for teaching biomedical engineers several specific subjects such as medical devices and imaging systems. These assignments follow principles that are used within clinically used medical devices. We believe that these tasks contribute to better practical knowledge of graduates and better performance of biomedical engineers in clinical practice. The practical assignments are also well-evaluated by the students. During the Covid pandemic, the university was closed for a period of time, and we observed a lack of practical knowledge of medical devices among students as well as lower self-confidence. We believe that these practical hands-on tasks are very difficult to be replaced with any e-learning or distant form of education. 2023, National Defence University - Carol I Printing House.
