Software for Image Analysis in Gunshot Residue Examination
Original language description
Gunshot residue (GSR) analysis is essential in forensic and ballistic investigations for linking suspects, weapons, and crime scenes. Traditional manual evaluation of GSR patterns is labor-intensive and prone to variability. Existing software solutions, such as ImageJ and MATLAB, lack specialized functionalities for GSR analysis. This paper presents a novel software solution designed specifically for GSR image analysis. Built on the SPixel viewer, it is implemented in C# using the WinForms framework for Windows compatibility. The software integrates advanced image processing techniques, including region selection, morphological operations, and edge detection. It supports chemographic and infrared nondestructive inspection (IRNDI) methodologies for enhanced forensic applications. Key features include evaluation of selected areas and comparative analysis through side-by-side visualization, RGB mapping, and image overlaying. The software streamlines GSR examination, reducing manual effort and improving accuracy.
