Stochastic Optimization of Concrete Cover Exposed to Carbonation
Original language description
Progressive carbonation depth and protective concrete cover are considered as random variables described by three-parameter lognormal distribution. Probabilistic methods are applied to verify protection of reinforcement, defined as carbonation depth being less than concrete cover, and to specify adequate thickness of concrete cover. Taking into account design life of a structure, proposed method of stochastic optimization indicates that the optimum thickness of concrete cover is significantly dependenton the cost ratio Cf/C1 of the malfunction cost Cf to marginal cost C1 as well as on the required design life of a structure. It appears that commonly used concrete covers may not be adequate.
