    An account of a major series of experiments consisting of one hundred tests or so, on thin-walled steel plate girders subject to alternated loading will be given. The initiation and growth of fatigue cracks, arising at the toes of the fillet welds connecting the web sheet with the girder flanges and/or transverse stiffeners, and their consequence on the failure mechanism and fatigue limit state of the whole girder, is investigated. At that, the influence of the girder geometry, especially that of web slenderness and flange size, and the effect of the regime of load cycling, in particular that of loading range and loading mean value, are examined. Based on the evaluation of the results derived, a number of load cycles and fatigue failure load (the so-called S- N curve, or, as the case may be, with a fixed survivability, the P-S-N curve and of formulae for the remaining fatigue life
