Probabilistic Prediction of Floods and Experience from Structural Failures

  • Original language description

A number of structures were affected by flooding in August 2002 in the Czech Republic. Damage to structures was on an unprecedented scale. Recorded water levels seemed to be exceptionally high. Forensic assessments of damaged structures were aimed to provide answers to the following questions: was the flooding really so exceptional and unpredictable? What were main causes of structural failures? To provide background information for such an assessment, hydrological data for annual maximum discharges ofthe Vltava River in Prague since 1827 are thus analysed by standard statistical methods. Two-parameter lognormal distribution may be the most suitable theoretical model for annual maximum discharges. The extreme discharges corresponding to characteristicand design values are estimated. The discharge in 2002 may correspond to a considerably long return period. Main observed causes of structural damage are classified into geotechnical and structural aspects.

Předpovídání povodní s využitím pravděpodobnostních metod a zkušenost z poruch konstrukcí

  • Czech description

Příčiny poruch stavební konstrukcí zahrnují geotechnické a konstrukční příčiny.
