Probabilistic Design for Cracking of Concrete Structures
Original language description
Serviceability limit states, particularly cracking, are of uttermost importance for the overall performance of many reinforced concrete structures. Both crack width due to loading and admissible limiting crack widths are random variables of a considerable scatter and significant vagueness. Probabilistic methods are therefore applied to analyze reliability of reinforced concrete structures with respect to cracking and to verify current design procedures. In addition, methods of probabilistic optimizationare applied to assess the optimum reinforcement area and adequate reliability level. General probabilistic concepts are supplemented by a detailed analysis of a reinforced concrete slab. Available theoretical models for basic variables are used to derive random properties of the crack width due to loading. It appears that the reinforcement area required by the ultimate limit states may not be sufficient as it may lead to an unacceptably high probability of serviceability failure.
