Probabilistic Model for Compressive Strength of Historic Masonry
Original language description
Heritage structures are made of different types of masonry with significantly different properties. As a rule information on mechanical properties of masonry components has to be obtained by minor destructive- or non-destructive testing. Estimation of masonry strength from measurements with due regard to all the uncertainties is one of key issues of the reliability assessment. In this study the probabilistic model of masonry strength is developed taking into account uncertainties in basic variables andtesting procedures. It is shown that statistical characteristics of the masonry strength can be well estimated using fundamental statistical methods. Described assessment of a church from 17th century reveals that the design value based on the probabilistic model is significantly greater than that obtained using the partial factor method.
