Reliability Assessment of Industrial Chimneys Affected by Carbonation-Induced Corrosion; Decision-Making Based on Vol Analysis
Original language description
This case study deals with the problems of existing reinforced concrete structures, which are at the end of their service life (usually designed for 40 years), and it is necessary to assess their reliability and decide on upgrade to extend their service life. An industrial chimney serves as an example where corrosion of the reinforcement caused by the carbonation of the concrete cover is a factor dominating reliability. All essential decision alternatives – repair, monitoring, no intervention – are compared using a value-of-conditional-information analysis – posterior analysis that evaluates whether monitoring costs are outweighed by the gain of new information. The result of the analysis should guide decision about reliability of other existing reinforced concrete structures.
