Target Reliability for New and Existing Railway Civil Engineering Structures

  • Original language description

The scope of this chapter is to present target reliability criteria for new and existing railway civil engineering structures. The structures under consideration are classified. Civil engineering structures such as bridges, station buildings, tunnels etc. are taken into account while electrical and mechanical components such as signalling systems, ventilation systems, electrification systems are not considered. The general concepts for risk acceptance are briefly reviewed particularly in their relation to the target reliability criteria. The reliability index as a measure of the reliability and consequently the failure probability of a structure or structural member is presented. An optimization procedure of bridge reliability is illustrated by a case study. The difference between new and existing structures is highlighted and target reliability criteria in current standards are provided and discussed.
