Resistance of Concrete With Styrene-Acrylate Additive in Low-Ph Environment

  • Original language description

The paper shows results of a study focused on developing concrete with high resistance in low-pH environment. Low pH is experienced very often in agriculture industry (e.g. silage pits, silage troughs). The degradation of concrete in these conditions is very fast. Experimental part of the work was focused on using sealing additive based on styrene-acrylate polymer, which is directly added to concrete mixture at various concentrations. In total, 5 mixtures were measured in liquid environment with pH 3. Formic acid, which is often added to the silage pits as additive, was used for adjustment of pH. Degradation of concrete was evaluated using weight loss and depth of attack. Article also contains other results of measurement both for fresh and cured concrete (e.g. depth of penetration of pressurized water, compressive strength). Polymer addition significantly hindered penetration of pressurized water up to 50 % compared to reference concrete with no additive. Corrosion resistance of concrete in the low pH environment was increased due to amount of styrene-acrylate polymer addition.
