Crack Propagation Prediction in Aluminum Friction Welded Joints

  • Original language description

A numerical – experimental approach practical to assess the fatigue behavior of friction welded aluminum joints is demonstrated. The effect of manufacturing residual stresses on crack growth in the joints driven by a remote fatigue load is prognosticated. The presented sequential method begins with the experimental residual stress evaluation by the contour method and continues on doing the multiple crack propagation simulation by the DUAL BOUNDARY ELEMENT METHOD. Concurrently, the friction butt of the AA 2024 – T3 alloy is imitated applying a thermo – mechanical FEM model. Within the bounds of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, the superposition principle is insisted to offer the mathematical foundation promoting the intended modeling strategy. So as to validate the proposed technique, specimens are experimented in fatigue, obtaining multiple crack growth scenarios that are checked, so that to contrast experimental with predicted crack propagation rates.
