Effects of Hydrogen Embrittlement on the Structure and Strength of Prestressing Reinforcement

  • Original language description

The paper focuses on studying the influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of prestressing reinforcement in bridge structures. An experimental system was developed in which gaseous hydrogen is produced on the surface of steel in an exposure aqueous solution due to cathodic polarization (application of a direct current source). This hydrogen diffuses into the structure of the steel reinforcement. The influence of hydrogen on the reduction of mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, ductility) is subsequently evaluated through tensile testing during the exposition of prestressing reinforcement samples, metallography, and examination of fracture surfaces (fractography) after the tensile tests. The article includes evaluations of all the above-mentioned characteristics in several different groups according to the differences of exposure and subsequent tensile tests.
