Fragility of Structures Due to Extreme Actions
Original language description
The conventional term “reliability” is supplemented by the introduced terms “fragility”, dependent not only on common random variables but also on a deterministic environmental change (extreme actions like wind, snow, tornado, hurricane, seismicity). The fragility curve shows the variation of the probability of exceeding a given level of structural damage with the deterministic intensity p of the extreme action. It also closely relates to the sustainability of a structure. Cost optimization considering structural sustainability may lead to significant savings. The optimum structural resistance depends on cost parameters and the intensity of the environmental change.
