Original language description
Wind load in South Africa, as a unique temporally dependent extreme value action, arguably plays the most significant role in the design base of structures in many instances. The impact of climate change due to human activities during the service life of structures, that are currently designed for a stationary extreme wind climate, therefore demands urgent attention. This preliminary assessment on the impact of climate change on future projected wind climate conditions indicates that changes can be expected in the extreme wind climate used to derive the design base for wind load. The changes in the climate drivers, i.e. the synoptic scale circulation features, will probably induce changes in the nature of the strong wind mechanisms prevalent over the country. Uncertainty in the future extreme wind climate and the reliability of the design base for structures is caused because of the absence of certainty of the most likely future greenhouse gas emission scenario and the reliable quantification of the future extreme wind climate. To reduce the uncertainty, this study facilitates a recommendation of suggested relevant climatological studies.
