Teaching Vowel Sounds: Differences between English and Czech

  • Original language description

The focus of the Chapter is on those features of English vowel sounds which can cause problems for Czech learners of English. Theoretical background and examples of genuine vowel mistakes made by students of English are given throughout. In a wider EFL context, it looks at good reasons why to teach pronunciation and points out some pronunciation features/areas which often cause communication breakdown, affect both productive and receptive skills and which are therefore considered by progressive applied linguists essential for students to get right if they are to remain intelligible (e.g. vowel length distinction and vowel reduction).
