Pixel detectors in double beta decay, experiments COBRA and TGV
Original language description
The double beta decay is a very challenging subject in today's physics. It can be used as a powerful tool to test neutrino properties (e.g. Dirac or Majorana type of neutrino) and lepton number conservation. However, these experiments demand very high sensitivity and very strong background reduction. New experimental approaches are necessary for further improvement of the results. Pixel detectors oer new possibilities in this direction. Pixel detectors have the advantage of identifying the background events with better eciency. The Timepix detector from Medipix collaboration is currently under investigation for two double beta decay experiments (TGV, COBRA). A new coincidence setup, pixel telescope (with detectors face to face) has been constructed andextensive background measurements are under way. Large effort is made to understand the background radiation. The preliminary results obtained from the background measurements (surface and underground) are presented.
