    Experimental Development of Various Types of Expanders for Small Scale Organic Rankine Cycle Power Systems

    This contribution presents a comprehensive experimental study on the development of expanders for small scale Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power systems for applications in renewable energy and waste heat recovery. Addressing the need for efficient and affordable expanders, our work encompasses the theoretical design, physical fabrication, and experimental performance analysis of three distinct types of expanders: a rotary vane expander, axial turbines, and a radial velocity compounded turbine. The experimental framework is structured around two test rigs, each employing a different working fluid - one with a hexamethyldisiloxane (MM) fluid and the other with isobutane, showcasing the versatility of the expanders across varied thermodynamic mediums. First, theoretical design of the expanders is summarized, focusing on optimizing their geometries and operational parameters. This phase is complemented by CFD analysis to improve performance prediction. Subsequently, we delve into the physical design aspect, describing CAD design and fabrication process. The main results come from the experimental performance analysis, conducted under a variety of conditions to assess efficiency, power output, and durability. Aside from performance and efficiency characteristics, several lessons learned from issues in the model to experiment path are presented as well. The comparative analysis between the different expander types, alongside the distinct working fluids, provides valuable insights into their suitability and performance under varying operational conditions.
