Utilizing Material Cadastres for Pre-Demolition Audits

The construction industry consumes significant resources, generates substantial waste, and is a primary contributor to grey emissions. Recycling can help close material loops, but efficient recycling depends on detailed information about the quantity and quality of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Pre-demolition audits (PDAs) can provide this information, yet high costs limit their widespread use. Typology-based material cadastres could offer a cost-effective alternative. This paper examines whether this approach could facilitate broader use of PDAs. We identified the information requirements for recycling-focused projects through a literature review and a stakeholder workshop, then tested the material cadastre method in a pilot study conducted in Prague. These components were integrated in a matching analysis. Our findings show that existing cadastre-based data already meets many PDA information requirements, although it lacks qualitative specifics, particularly regarding pollutant content. Stakeholders highlighted three potential applications of material cadastres to support PDAs: building-level PDAs to simplify selective deconstruction planning, PDAs tailored by districts to meet local C&D waste management needs, and city-wide PDAs to inform infrastructure development for recycling.
