Towards Seamless Digitization in OPC UA

  • Original language description

The advent of Industry 4.0 has brought about the need for seamless communication and integration amongdiverse industrial automation systems. While current standards such as OPC UA address syntactic interoper-ability, they fall short in addressing semantic heterogeneity, which poses a challenge to the true understandingof exchanged data. The existing approaches, which rely on textual information models such as the OPC UAcompanion specifications, suffer from possible ambiguity and difficulties in development and validation. Thisresearch aims to overcome these challenges by exploring the development of an explicit, user-friendly, andmachine-readable model specification for the conditional implementation of Rockwell Automation drives’motion axis attributes within OPC UA. The paper delves into suitable formalisms for model specification, tak-ing into account user interaction and expressivity, and proposes mechanisms for model validation and futureextensions. These efforts pave the way for enhanced semantic interoperability in industrial automation, thuscontributing to the advancement of Industry 4.0.
