Testing Possibilities of Personal Radiation and Chemical Protective Clothing
Original language description
Protective properties of radiation and chemical personal protective clothing are studied at National Institute for NBC Protection. Radiation shielding protective clothing (RSPC) are prior tested via a narrow collimated beam of X and gamma rays originated from Ba-133, Am-241, Cs-137, Co-60, Eu 152 point sources. X or gamma rays attenuation in tested materials is then determined. Properties of shielding garments in dispersed ionizing rays environment are tested in radioactive aerosol atmosphere, developed in hermetic "Radon-Aerosol Chamber" (RAC), where short term radionuclides (e.g. La-140, Na-24, Tc-99m, Rn-222 together with its decay products) are used for preparation of aerosol atmosphere. A mannequin placed inside the RAC is equipped with the tested RSPC together with groups of thermo-luminescent dosimeters (TLDs). Absorbed dose decrease determines protective efficiency of RSPCs. Penetration through leaks of chemical protective clothing together with other personal protective equipment (masks/respirators, gloves or protective shoes) is frequently tested. A mannequin is placed inside hermetic „Toxicological Chamber“ with atmosphere of selected chemical compound, such as benzoyl chloride, chlorine gas or sulphur mustard. Testing person is dressed in specially impregnated underwear and the tested protective clothing. Colour changes caused by reaction between tested compound and impregnated underwear visualise the points of untightness of the protective suit and/or its single parts. Physiological stress of users induced by wearing of radiation and/or chemical protective suits can be tested in specially designed „Climatic Test Chamber“. The tested person acclimatisation under different thermal, air flow and humidity conditions may also be carried out. They can be dressed in underwear together with chemical protective suit or radiation shielding protection clothing, or combination of both.
