Telemetric monitoring of physiological functions to reduce health risk in wearing PPE: Invasive vs. non-invasive measurement

  • Original language description

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary body protection of first responders working in conditions of high CBRN threat. Nevertheless, the PPE usage is connected to changes in normal heat exchange between the human body and the surrounding environment. PPE creates a barrier between the body and the hazardous environment, but at same time it hampers typical heat dissipation of human body and this way creating the risk of thermal strain during the work in PPE. This strain can influence cognitive functions and lead to heat exhaustion and harmful health consequences. Thus, it is important to monitor physiological parameters such as heart frequency and the core body temperature of persons working in PPE to prevent such risk situations. In our research, we compared two different telemetric systems for monitoring physiological functions – the FlexiGuard system developed by FBMI of the Czech Technical University in Prague, and the CORE system developed by greenTEG, Zurich, Switzerland. The FlexiGuard system uses a rectal cable probe for measuring the core body temperature while the CORE system employs an indirect measurement by a novel heat flux sensor. The comparison revealed that the FlexiGuard system provided more precise values of the core body temperature across all physical activity regimes, while the CORE system delivered biased values during specific transient conditions when the high activity mode of the monitored person changed to the rest mode. However, from the wearers’ point of view, the CORE system is more comfortable and ethically acceptable than the FlexiGuard.
