Modification of Surface Properties of Polyethylene Through Immobilisation of Hyaluronic Acid
Original language description
Polymeric materials are used for various medical applications including blood-contacting and prosthetic devices, vascular grafts and materials for tissue repair. In many of these applications, modification of surface properties of the polymer is needed to improve its biocompatibility and to control polymer-tissue interactions. This can be achieved by attachment of biopolymers to surfaces. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a polysacharide component of the extracellular matrix of various animal tissues, is frequentlyused in medicine and in the construction of materials for tissue repair. In this work we report on the immobilisation of HA to polyethylene (PE) and we present results characterising the modification of surface properties of PE due to presence of HA.
