Contribution to Deproteination of Residual Chrome Sludge after Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Shavings with Additional Removal of Magnesium

  • Original language description

Chrome-tanned leather manufacture, so-called shavings are produced which represent a considerable volume of hazardous waste. One of the ways of its processing is the chemical mode (acid, alkaline or enzymatic hydrolysis). For a number of reasons, the method most suitable is the enzymatic, where a soluble collagen hydrolyzate and solid fraction (the so-called chrome cake) are formed. The utilization of this solid waste of high chrome content requires, in the first place, reducing the content of protein fraction contaminating the material. This process was mainly realized through multiple decantation with water (or with adapted pH for removing and recycling magnesium employed in hydrolysis). This path removed about 16 % protein fraction (free protein) and approx. 11 % magnesium. The quantity of washed-out Mg increased to 80% by adaptation of pH to 6.8. A 100% washing-out of magnesium and thus its separation from chromium may be expected to take place at pH = 6, however, this optimal valu
