Delignification of banana stem enhances biogas production
Original language description
Banana (Musa sapientum, Musa paradiseica etc) is one of the popular crops of western, southern and central India. After fruit is harvested, stem can be used for neither fuel nor fodder owing to high moisture content. Banana stem contains lignin 22% and cellulose 35% on dry weight basis. Cellulose is one of the potential organic components for biogas production. The presence of lignin along with cellulose delays the biomethanation process. Biological delignification is a promising process to enhance biogas production during anaerobic digestion. Biogas production was observed using both untreated and delignified banana stems. Delignification was done biologically using white rot fungus viz. Trametes versicolor (TV) and Pleurotus ostreatus (PO). Around 41% and 39 % less lignin were observed in case of TV and PO treated banana stem respectively. Delignified banana stem produced more and better gas compared to untreated banana stem when digested anaerobically. The TV treated banana stem pro
