"One of the several routes to prepare nanocomposite is an extrusion-compounding route whereby the intercalated clay is fed into the polymer hot melt and is dispersed. The basic objective in preparing the nanocomposite is to fully disperse or exfoliate the clay into polymer matrix. Polymer/clay nanocomposites prepared from intercalated and cointercalated montmorillonite and PVC were compounded in KO-kneader. Different types of a plasticizer were used. A plasticizer influence of the type of organoclay wasobserved. The different conditions of compounding were tested. Problems with thermal stability of composite during compounding can be eliminated by pretreatment of the organoclay with plasticizer, which creates a barrier between polymer and quaternary amine. Simultaneously cointercalation by plasticizer facilitates exfoliation and stabilizes dimensions of clay platelets in polymer matrix.
