New Possibilities in Production of Biodegradable Polymers Utilising Dechromated Leather Wastes
Original language description
The contribution presents potential utilisation of pre-treated chrome-tanned wastes as readily biodegradable components for preparing biodegradable plastics. Mixed films were prepared from PVA modified with collagen hydrolysate and added glycerol for improving processing properties, with particular components present in various percentage ranges of 60-70% mass PVA, 13-20% mass collagen hydrolysate and 11-22% mass glycerol. Biodegradability of mixed films was tested under aerobic conditions employing amethod for manometric determination of oxygen consumption in a respirometer. Assessment of biodegradability employed a mixed microbial culture in the form of unadapted and PVA-adapted activated sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant. Pure PVA isdegraded with a current unadapted wastewater-treatment culture during a period of approx. 17 days with an approx. 12-day lag phase. With mixed films, however, a 2- to 3-stage degradation course occurs where the components broken down firs
