Furo[3,4-c]quinoline-3,4(1H,5H)-diones are formed by rearrangement of conveniently available furo[2,3-c]-quinoline-2,4(3aH,5H)-diones, for which the presence of a base catalyst is essential. A satisfactory preparative accomplishment of this transformation has been developed based on a treatment of starting compounds with catalytic amount of 4-dimethylaminopyridine in boiling cyclohexylbenzene. A plausible reaction mechanism for the rearrangement has been proposed.
